This page is only for Shimano compatible cassettes.

Shimano cassettes come in 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11spd versions. 9 and 10spd cassettes will fit 8-spd Shimano cassette hubs. The 5, 6, 7 and 8spd cassettes come in Uniglide and Hyperglide versions. The Uniglide versions use a screw threaded top gear sprocket to secure all the sprockets in place. The Hyperglide and later cassetes all use a separate lockring. The DA Uniglide cassette's screw threaded top gear sprocket is not compatible with any hubs other than Dura-Ace.

SHIMANO UNIGLIDE (UG) FIT CASSETTES
Top gear sprocket screws-on and locks cassette in place
These were used on pre-1990 model Shimano cassette hubs. In many cases the freehub body on the hub can be changed for a later HG freehub bodywhich uses a lockring. Dura-Ace cassette top gear sprockets use a smaller thread diameter than all other UG type hubs though the main cassette body is perfectly compatible. All UG type cassettes are in very short supply.

SHIMANO HG FIT CASSETTES
Separate lockring locks cassette into place
These were used on all 1990 on model Shimano cassette hubs.Unlike with UG cassettes Shimano Dura-Ace are fully compatible with other Shimano HG cassette hubs. 7-speed hubs can only take a 6spd or 7spd cassette. 10spd, 9spd and 8spd hubs can all be fitted with 8spd cassettes.
